How often do you wash your makeup brushes?

I was hanging out with some friends having a conversation and I randomly mentioned, "Oh, I gotta remember to wash my brushes when I get home". They were like, "what brushes?" I was like, " My makeup brushes!" Then one of them said, " You wash your makeup brushes?". I can't believe she asked me that question. I was even more surprised when all of them told me that they've never washed their makeup brushes ever! Never!!!. I know they're not a makeup junkee like me and they don't own a gazillion of makeup brushes like I do but ARE YOU SERIOUS???

I had to educated my friends a little bit on how important to wash your brushes regularly. I told them:
  • You have to wash a new brush. You don't know where its been. A lot of times they have odors and dyes in the bristles that you want to get rid off before you use it on your face. This shocked them. They thought new brushes are clean and ready to be used.
  • You have to at least wash your brushes once a week or even everyday if you want. Wash it with shampoo, dish washing soap, Olive oil, brush cleaner or whatever. Just wash them!!!
  • Bacteria grows in dirty brushes and obviously if you use a dirty brush, the bacteria will transfer onto your face and will cause break outs and I dunno what...you don't want that do you?

I kind of scared them a bit but I made sure I stressed enough the importance of washing their makeup brushes. As for me, I wash my big brushes every 3 days with baby shampoo, my foundation brush everyday and I spot clean my small brushes with a brush cleaner right after I use them.

What about you, how often do you wash your makeup brushes?

  1. I'm definitely guilty with neglecting to wash my brushes. But I do try to do so as often as I can amidst my busy schedule.

Let me share an experience on how important it is! During a particularly busy day I forgot to replace the cap of my liquid foundation and it oozed a bit on my blush brush. In my haste, I rummaged through my traincase in search of an alternative brush and stumbled on an old, kabuki which hasn't been washed in God knows how many months.

Thinking it should be fine, I swiped it on my cheeks and at the end of the day, I had a clutter of cystic pimples on my cheek :( It was a terrible, learning experience.

So girls, wash your brushes! Haha :)

  4. I should wash mine more often..

I usually do once a week with baby shampoo for my most used brushes - esp. my foundation brush cause that one takes time to clean. :p

I have so many eye brushes from buying sets that if I'm in a hurry, I'll just grab a clean one and use that.. then once enough have accumulated, I'll wash them all at once. I gotta pick up a brush cleaner for in between though. :)

And now they wash their brushes. I did the same crime before when I only wore Bare Minerals, I never washed the brushes, yuck! Now I know better thanks to youtube and blogger!

And I wash my brushes once a week, and I spot clean all of them before I use them everyday, I use Mac brush cleanser. :)

  10. I get a bit lazy to wash my brushes so often so I'd buy a couple of the same brushes and so I can just use it, pile it up and wash everything at the end of the week :p

  13. oh!
i have a friend like that too. I just randomly said that i ought to wash my brushes & she was shocked to know i wash them..she was like 'seriously?!'

anyway, i wash my brushes after every use. i don't really own a lot of brushes (like MUAs), but i make sure that i wash them every time i use it because i am acne-prone & i don't wanna encourage those little zits to feel at home in my brushes.

  14. I am a bad girl.
I do not have the habit of wash them, but I finally understand that it is necessary to do it.
I will try a quick clean after every use, I at least, wash them once every two weeks.
