I've always been curious with the glossy eye makeup seen in beauty and high fashion magazines. The glossy effect is so beautiful. I even remember seeing glossy eye lids for the first time in Natalie Imbruglia's music video "Torn" back in the 90's (that song is SICK!). I had no clue what it was, but I was very much drawn into her shiny/wet look eyes.
What about in real life, can anyone pull off the glossy eye lids? I think it is possible, but I bet it would be annoying. I mean, having a sticky substance on your eyes would be so uncomfortable and it will just sink into the crease of the eyes making it look gross.
Here are some photos I found on the internet showing what gloss eye makeup looks like.
So I tried it the other day to see how it would look on me. I didn't go anywhere because I'm afraid people would look at me weird lol.
I primed my eyes with a matte concealer, then I dabbed a clear lip gloss on the lids (NYX round lip gloss in clear or you can use Vaseline too). I curled my lashes, applied a black mascara (Maybelline Volum Express Falsies) and voila! Glossy eye lids!

Eh...I didn't like it. It looks okay, but it's not for me. I didn't like the uncomfortable sticky feeling that made my eyes blink non stop O_o. I'll just leave the "glossy eye lids" look to high fashion models lol.

I bet they must have done these photo shoots really fast before the eye makeup creased O_o.

Sorry for the terrible photos. You can't even see the gloss that much. It was more glossy in person I promise.

I think its interesting in photos but I prefer a matte look with maybe a little shimmer since I'm more of a lipgloss girl. I think if you have matte lips then maybe you can get away with the glossy eyelids but it might be a little weird in person 'cause I might think that individual's eyelid is very.... well, oily. lol.
ReplyDeleteHmmm yes I agree with the comment above...glossy eyelids may look weird i real life if its more nude or skin tone colour...I like eye shadow but not sure if i would like the glossy look...
ReplyDeleteI'd think it could look good for an special event, maybe for a gala... though it could look a bit 'trashy' if not done properly, non?
ReplyDeleteK.
i did black glossy eyeshadow on a model for a shoot, it was gorgeous...but yeah, such a pain in the ass to put on AND remove. I did it with a clear gloss and it was way sticky. looked hot for the moment though
ReplyDeleteYuck. I mean, I think it looks nice, but it sounds awful.
ReplyDeletei agree that they may have just took the photos really fast to avoid creasing.maybe the whole time they are doing it the models eye are closed & they just escort the model on the ramp with eyes closed..haha!
ReplyDeletebut still i think this looks pretty nice..in pictures only!
LOL
I tried that once and eh,I wouldn't wear it. ever. lol

ReplyDeleteThey come in so many pretty colors now! I especially love the case :)
ReplyDeleteGlossy eye makeup is probably too daring for most people :p I wonder what they do... use a matte shadow on their eyes and slick on some clear gloss? :p I think it would feel quite sticky :p
ReplyDeleteIt's so difficult to maintain glossy lids, especially if you live in a tropical country like the Philippines. It creases and it melts fast because of the warm weather.
ReplyDeleteGlossy lids are really interesting for photo shoots. I have a friend that's a super talented makeup artist (really, there's few who can compare to her) and she did this incredible vampy makeup with black and red and then she topped it off with a clear gloss ... breathtaking stuff!
ReplyDeleteMe, I've tried glossy lids for a contest but it creased on me within 3 minutes, I could barely take a decent pic.
Well glossy MU is possible but it's terrible to do. It creases like madness too. I think mac has a product (glossy eyes or sth?) especially for this.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think it's a better look for high fashion models; I don't think it's a good look for everyday wear.
ReplyDeleteI tried it just now after seeing this post. It's so uncomfy and feels weird. Sticky and I also blinked a lot. :P
ReplyDeleteThis looks gorgeous in pictures but i would never wear it :)

I don't think it's so bad as long as it's not overdone.. I actually kinda like it..
ReplyDeleteGreat blog hun.. I'm following ;)
It is truly awesome post. I like the purple eye shade here. Look like nothing else. So good to see this blog here.

the problem with gloss is it is sticky and that it also attract a lot of dirt, not to forget it is a pain to get off. i have recently started using almond oil and aloe vera gel mixture on my eyes, largely due to under eye issues. i notice that this gives me a great glossy eye look. so i guess just dab some concealer and apply almond oil and some gel so that your lids shine without needing too much oil. let me know how it goes.
ReplyDeleteI tried to cop that eye-do too before using lipgloss, and i was disappointed too,. i thought they were using some special make-up,.. =)
ReplyDeleteI think that glossy lids is beautifull on the photos. I would have a real idea if i would see that in person. Then i'm agree with you, that must be a very strange feel to have sticky eyes lol. I should try one day to make my opinion. :)
ReplyDeleteAs you guess i have a sensitive skin. May be i don't treat right my skin that why every little things can gives me spot, dryness etc... :( i didn't find yet the good care for my skin.
you are beautiful ever.love this make-up.xoxo
ReplyDeleteooohh!! it does look pretty on photos.. maybe we'll leave this for mag editorials. :) hehehe!
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a video that shows you how to do it. It's one part clear gloss one part rose salve.

I also wanted to say that yes most people do it for just photoshoots :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. I’m actually surprised the use of blogs and wikis isn’t higher.
ReplyDeletenice post I like your site very well and continue to do so. I have brokemark your site.
I guess we have to blame the marketers for being so creative and convincing.
Thanks for sharing such a good information. Everybody know that there is a main role of eyes in a fashion model. Thanks for sharing this post.
I've tried the look and I love how it looks but it only lasts for a few minutes until it begins to crease. I used a glittery lipgloss and my eyes sparkeled realyl nice but not worth it since it doesn't last...oh well :/
